La forma del filo trapezoidale corrisponde a un trapezio isoscele con un angolo di 15°. Questo risulta in un angolo laterale di 30°. Grazie alla sua forma speciale, il filo trapezoidale può trasmettere molto bene forze assiali e movimenti molto elevati. Questa filettatura speciale è usata, per esempio, in morsetti a vite, morse, fresatrici CNC, torni e carrelli elevatori. La filettatura è designata dall'abbreviazione "Tr", il diametro e il passo della filettatura. Ecco un esempio: Tr 14 x 3 è una filettatura trapezoidale con un diametro di 14 mm e un passo di 3 mm.
